Men’s Health Week 2025

09 Jun 2025
Venue

Men’s Health Week (June 9–15) is a national movement to spotlight the health and wellbeing of New Zealand men. MHW aims to help you get right on top of your biggest and most important asset – your health.

The sole purpose at MHW is to get guys to think a little more and know a little more about their health. We want to encourage men to start with the small steps that can enable them to turn their health issues around.

Little steps can – and will – make big differences. You just have to start.

For one week in June each year, MHW gets to remind us all of the small things we should be doing, the health routines we can understand and control.  But guys, one week each year won’t cut it.

Why Men’s Health Deserves Attention

Let’s talk facts:

  • A boy born today will live nearly four years less than a girl born in the room next door. He will be over 20% more likely to die of a heart attack than the girl, and almost 30% more likely to get diabetes.

  • Worse, he is three times more likely to die by suicide or in a motor car crash.

  • 8 Kiwi families every day lose a loved partner, father or tupuna to a PREVENTABLE illness, one they didn’t need to die from.

  • Māori and Pasifika men live significantly shorter lives on average than other races in NZ. That’s so wrong.

  • Almost one Kiwi man in four will die before they reach retirement age. One in four of us won’t live to retire!

Movement Is Medicine — Especially When It's Shared

For many men, the idea of “exercise” can feel overwhelming. That’s why we are committed to making it social, supportive, and specific to your needs.

Whether it’s walking with a mate, joining a group class, or rebuilding strength after illness, moving more isn’t just about fitness. It’s about:

  • Reducing risk of chronic disease

  • Improving mood, energy and mental resilience

  • Creating structure, accountability and connection

  • Preventing injuries and boosting independence

And here’s the key: Men are more likely to keep moving when they do it together. It’s why community-based programs and peer support matter so much in men’s health.

It All Starts with One Appointment

Whether it’s been 12 months or 12 years since your last check-up, Men’s Health Week is the time to organise that GP appointment and ask for a check-up. Book your appointment and tell them how long since your last doctor visit. Make a time that works for you – some clinics work outside 9-5 timings. Know you and your family’s health history – it can put things in context.

If you are unsure of anything or a little worried, it is cool to bring in someone else who can help you ask questions and understand it all.

Book it now, then have a check-up each year - just like you do for your car!
